In Victorian England the Tub Chair became a favoured accessory amongst the landed gentry. Now it’s a design classic that remains as comfortable today as it was in the Court of Louis XV.
Before the 18th century chair design tended to favour the practical over the comfortable. This one has been modified with padding in between the arm rests and seat to create a more comfortable cushioned seat for the back.
There’s no exact moment recorded as to when the Tub Chair was invented or who invented it but what we do know is that one of the first was seen in the courts of King Louis XV of France.
The term ‘Tub Chair’ was introduced by importers to the USA in the late 18th century and in 1797 a Boston cabinet maker named George Bright customised his own brand of comfy chair that was distinctly tub like. However it was his peer, a trend-astute designer by the name of Charles Montgomery who gave them their unusual name – a quirky and fitting moniker that remains to this day. As word of their comfort and elegantly simple design spread in society circles so their popularity increased – eventually bringing Tub Chairs to well-heeled households in the UK.
